About The Artwork

This artwork compellingly depicts an Iranian school student wearing a school uniform while bravely rejecting the mandatory hijab. The image is transferred onto three distinct pieces of shaped plywood, and a symbolic tulip is painted into the student’s hair, appearing as if it’s naturally growing from her locks. Drawing on the rich symbolism from Iranian literature, where the tulip represents individuals persecuted for their beliefs, the piece resonates with the Women, Life, Freedom movement in Iran.
