About The Artwork

This work, which was on display at Christie's, has timeless value since it casts Orientalism, a contentious topic since the late 18th century in a new light (quite literally). Leila spells Orientalism in Farsi but reversing its order, playing with the meaning and symbolism of Orientalism. Farsi and Arabic are usually spelt from right to left: in this work you can read it only from left to right like in the western alphabet. As mentioned in Christie’s, this work can be considered a case of “Occidentalism”, a response of the East to Orientalism. By using neon, a symbol of contemporary art, as her medium, it is as if Leila is remerging Orientalism from art history to encourage dialogue between East and West on a controversial yet fascinating topic.
