While studying at the International Center of Photography, I began experimenting with expired photo paper found through eBay listings. Through ongoing darkroom experiments, I am interested in creating new life for this so-called expired paper. In doing so, I am questioning the authority behind stamping paper as expired–what does it mean when we deem something objectively still useful as “unworkable” or “vintage”? How are those adjectives accurate, especially if I am able to produce an image on what so many would consider a no longer usable product? In working with expired papers, the outcome is always unexpected – resulting in long hours of exploration and a journey in researching the history of the paper itself. There is an expected lack of control as the paper interacts with the developer in the darkroom. There, all one can do is observe and marvel.
