Mubarak Nasser Al-Thani
b. 1989, Qatar

Mubarak Nasser Al-Thani (B. 1989) is a multi-disciplinary artist from Doha, Qatar currently based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His work focus on aesthetically deconstructing urban landscapes. Mubarak predominantly explores architecture, skylines, infrastructure, transportation, mobility, travel urban culture, cultural exchange and architecture-looking domestic items – which he considers an intrinsic part of city landscapes. The idea is to capture this new form of life humans have adapted to due to economies of scale and convenience.

Technique wise, the practice includes, brush stroking, sponge smudging, on-and-off mask-taping, color mixing and, detours led by urges such as random brush strokes. While mostly acrylic, the works use mixed media includes but not limited to ink, oil, pencil, pastel, charcoal, etc. The works aim to archive existing architecture but at the same time avoid being purely archival by deconstructing, introducing depth and perspective error. Thus, the paintings focus primarily on shape, form, color and texture to achieve complex compositions. The final outcome has a cubically deconstructed style and a simplistic presentation in a smartly dumb manner. The works intridue imagination by investigating the level of rigidity versus accuracy, and explore the tension between seriousness and playfulness in an overarching sense.

Receiving a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from New York University (NYU). Mubarak was an artist in residence at Doha Fire Station and ISCP in Brooklyn, NY. He has shown in exhibitions in New York City, Paris, Geneva, Saint Petersburg, Shanghai and Doha. Mubarak is currently enrolled in an MFA program at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design.
