Malak Mattar
b. 1999, Palestine

Malak Mattar, a Gaza Strip-based artist of surprising originality, creates powerfully expressionist faces, figures, and semi-abstract designs. She began painting at the age of thirteen. During Israel's 51-day military attack on Gaza in 2014. She felt compelled to unleash all of her negative energy, fear, anxiety, and utter panic because she was forced to stay inside for her own protection. She began painting with simple watercolor on paper and art supplies from her school. For her, this opened up a whole new world of self-expression. Mattar produced over 300 works of art.

Since she was unable to leave Gaza due to Israeli occupation restrictions, Mattar shared her paintings with the world through social media, including Instagram and Facebook. She started selling her originals to customers all over the world on her fourteenth birthday. She was financially self-sufficient in less than two years. Mattar's work attracted the attention of galleries outside of Palestine, and she has had solo and group exhibits in Jerusalem, France, Spain, Turkey, Costa Rica, India, England, 11 states in the United States, and the Art under Attack show at the Rayburn House Office Building, US House of Representatives, DC.

Malak Mattar has excelled academically while honing her creative ability, earning the highest grade point average in the Gaza Strip in 2017, her senior year of high school, and the second highest grade average in all of Palestine that year, out of thousands of students in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
