Malak Mattar
b. 1999, Palestine

Gaza born and raised artist Malak Mattar creates powerfully expressionist faces, figures, and abstract works influenced by her early life living in Gaza. She began painting at the age of thirteen during Israel's 51-day military attack on Gaza in 2014. She felt compelled to unleash the negative energy, fear, anxiety, and utter panic as she was forced to seek refuge in her home. She began painting with watercolor on paper and art supplies sourced from her school. For her, this opened up a whole new world of self-expression where Mattar produced over 300 works of art.

Malak’s work attracted the attention of galleries outside of Palestine, and she has since had solo and group exhibits in Jerusalem, France, Spain, Turkey, Costa Rica, India, England, 11 states in the United States, and the Art under Attack show at the Rayburn House Office Building, US House of Representatives in Washington DC.

Malak is also the author and illustrator of Sitti’s Bird, a children’s book based on her own life story.
