Artist Statement

My artworks are the mirror of my character as an Iranian, Irish woman with a complex personal history.

Having being born and raised in Tehran and having lived in South Korea for some time before moving to Ireland four years ago, my work has increasingly registered the urgency of investigating to work out ways in my artworks to show the contrasts and similarities between Eastern and Western cultures and peoples.

By creating stimulating visual experiences for the audience through the use of traditional pictorial elements such as Persian miniature figures and geometrical patterns I hope to incite the viewer to attempt some reconciliation between the conflicting sensibilities hidden within beautifully rendered portraits by Da Vinci or Renaissance landscapes. My artworks also include traditional Middle Eastern imagery alongside images familiar from canonical Western culture.

My work has always been inspired by the environment I live in. After moving to Ireland in 2009 I became fascinated by Irish culture, in particular by early illuminated manuscripts like the book of Kells. Comparing two radically different cultures in a way that is at once sincere and ironic is one of my primary pursuits.

I am also interested in working with layers of different materials, such as mirror and gold leaf. These layering, framings and mirroring are suggestive metaphors for the dynamic interaction between cultures.

While painting is the discipline to which I have been most devoted, I have also worked with other media such as photography, drawing and installation. The art form I choose depends on the conceptual nature of the project I am working on.
