Artist Statement

I find the human face to be engaging. I see it as the body’s billboard, attracting and catching my attention. I favor painting faces and figures because I’m intrigued by the characteristics of the human expression, and I believe that it carries a strong source of emotion. My aim is not only to present the body of the sitters, but the inner essence of my subject’s character. I often represent the people that I encounter in my life. My personal circle, such as friends and family, are exposed to the public through my work. I allow them to be witnessed by others and commemorated.

My art takes on a psychedelic perspective, inspired by insights derived from our popular culture. I draw from both urban as well as decorative art, juxtaposing ornamental, symbolic and graffiti-esque elements. My artworks are treated as commercialized stereotypes, an ‘eye candy’ that’s aesthetically pleasing to the viewer. Its commercial nature plays on the idea of society’s constant need to impress the public with pleasing depictions.
