Perryhan El Ashmawi
b. 1988, Egypt

"As artists, it's our job to look where others don't. We represent and interpret what we see in the world, and the world we wish to see."

Perry El Ashmawi was born in Bahrain in 1988 to Egyptian parents, and in 2009 she attained a BA in Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, majoring in Painting & Drawing. Perry has showcased her work in Montreal, Athens, Bahrain and Dubai and she was fortunate in being selected to showcase in three editions of The Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, held at the Bahrain National Museum. In Dubai, Perry was a selected artist for the 7th edition of SIKKA Art Fair, and also showcased for the 10th edition of The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award Exhibition, and the 9th Annual Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival. In 2018, Perry conducted art workshops at The Louvre Abu Dhabi, as a represented artist for The Sheikha Manal Little Artist Program, she coordinated tailor-made art tour and art programs for students between the ages of 10 to 15 years.

She finds inspiration from the innovative styles of contemporary and urban art. Graphic and graffiti illustrative works are a few examples of urban art that influence her designs. Exploring the regions art scene as a practicing artist, Perry is certain that art will always be a lifetime passion.

Artist Statement

I find the human face to be engaging. I see it as the body’s billboard, attracting and catching my attention. I favor painting faces and figures because I’m intrigued by the characteristics of the human expression, and I believe that it carries a strong source of emotion. My aim is not only to present the body of the sitters, but the inner essence of my subject’s character. I often represent the people that I encounter in my life. My personal circle, such as friends and family, are exposed to the public through my work. I allow them to be witnessed by others and commemorated.

My art takes on a psychedelic perspective, inspired by insights derived from our popular culture. I draw from both urban as well as decorative art, juxtaposing ornamental, symbolic and graffiti-esque elements. My artworks are treated as commercialized stereotypes, an ‘eye candy’ that’s aesthetically pleasing to the viewer. Its commercial nature plays on the idea of society’s constant need to impress the public with pleasing depictions.
