Seshie Kossi
b. 1979, Togo

Originally from Togo, Kossi Seshie began to paint intuitively on the ground, everywhere. From his childhood, expression through drawing became a necessity and then naturally gave way to painting. He forms, listens to his instinct and gives free rein to his sensitivity.

Abstraction as a pictorial form allows him to translate in a spiritual, mysterious and often unexpected way. Nature and traditions are his favorite themes. Travelling and living between Togo, Benin, Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal, Kossi occupies a considerable place in the world of visual art in West Africa. He has proven himself through individual exhibitions at the French Institute in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Bamako (Mali) among others.

Kossi has represented Togo at various cultural events and his works are in the private and public collections in the world.

Artist Statement

+

In a world that is collapsing by the day, Kossi Seshie is no different from projects that can bring the tangled brains of capitalism, individualism, and short division together for a little while. For the artist, every day when the sun rises is a time for meditation and introspection.

He doesn't know where to turn because he despises hypocrisy and the corruption that plagues the society he lives in. He had lost faith in these erratic individuals. He feeds optimism, perseverance, courage, and dreams into his daily existence through working, spreading webs to birth images that cross his thoughts, abstract designs that hide a lot of meanings.

Seshie Kossi always draws on our forefathers' legacies and exhorts the generation to which he belongs to be aware of them right now, to reconnect with our roots, our sources, for we weave the new rope at the end of the old.
